The son of two Presbyterian ministers from an American backwater called Spokane, James Pants went from being the teenage DJ for a black nationalist rap group to a multi-instrumentalist who can count on fans as diverse as Flying Lotus, Zane Lowe, Erol Alkan and XL’s new teen hip-hop internet sensation Tyler The Creator, who calls James “one of the most creative fucking people to walk this earth”.

James met Stones Throw Records head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf after his high school prom and dropped a debut album in 2008, Welcome, which told the tale of a lone music obsessive who synthesized a staggeringly broad record collection into a coherent LP in a style he dubbed “fresh beat”, taking in ’80s boogie, synth experiments, garage rock and much more.

Since then James has toured the globe, released Seven Seals (a tribute to his beloved ’70s cult and New Age records), a self-titled third album, and uprooted from Colorado to Cologne, where he works as a studio engineer.

It is the purpose of the Journal of Popular Noise to eschew convention in favor of a more bespoke approach to presentation.

In Truckasauras's debut release, Tea parties, Guns, and Valor (2008, Fourthcity/Journal of Popular Noise), we addressed methods of distribution and the limits of what may now constitute 'Record Art'.

Through the sophomore release Quarters (2010, Fourthcity/Journal of Popular Noise) we spoke about the 'Negative Space' surrounding the work itself. The format was traditional to illuminate the importance of place and time.

But now what challenges and inspiration does the year 2012 bring to us, and what do we in turn bring to it?

Our goal in 2012 is to re-evaluate the relationship between the listener and performer. We find this one way conversation, i.e. from artist to consumer, to be ostentatious and cavalier. In a day and age where media is being created at every moment by every person without end - the music becomes just a small part of the overall experience. Every one of us is making a contribution to what has become a landscape of overlapping layers and unpredictable combinations.

In 2012, Truckasauras in collaboration with the Journal of Popular Noise and Fourthcity, aims to redirect this one way conversation so that we might include these public contributions. The 'Record' to be released will be the collective work of everyone who chooses to participate in and around these events. By physically interacting, taking photos, videos, or sound recordings, as well as starring in them, the public will make a vital contribution, and in fact be the authors of the final work. Time and place as analogs to rhythm and tone. Parties, performance, installations, visions of sound, you and us, beer and whiskey, will all mix and overlap the next six to eight months in a cacophonous party gruel punctuated by glimmering alignments of pure ecstasy.
